The Story Of Simple
Everyone in the room is telling the truth. The truths do not agree.
A continuous-action play about pain, responsibility and the price of being believed.
After three months in an acute psychiatric unit, Eli is ready to leave.
Before he can, the people whose accounts have shaped his future are brought into one room: Ari, the former boyfriend who betrayed him; Rina, the nurse he threatened and who used force to stop him; and Miriam, his mother, who arrives with a suitcase and a plan.
A door can open. The window cannot.
The story
Across one continuous encounter, four people attempt to establish what happened, what can be forgiven and who is entitled to decide what comes next. Every account may be accurate. The accounts cannot all become the same story.
By the end, Eli must choose where to go — and which version of freedom he can live with.
The argument
Pain can explain what happened. Can it decide what happens next?
The Story Of Simple does not ask whether Eli’s pain is real. It asks what pain is permitted to justify.
The play refuses the easy division between victim and perpetrator, care and coercion, love and control. A person can be harmed and still cause harm. An act of care can protect and violate at once. Truth can be necessary without being sufficient.
The drama begins where innocence stops being available.
The room
One room. Continuous action.
A working door. A sealed window. Four chairs that move six inches at a time. No flashbacks. No literal knife. No restraint placed on Eli’s body. The past enters only when someone uses it to alter the present.
The scenography makes disagreement architectural: four translucent room shells occupy the same space, each displaced by six inches. Clear balloons rise and become trapped overhead.
The room never transforms. Consequence accumulates inside it.
Development status
The work has been developed through Forge, GMF’s CEO-led dramaturgical development programme, as part of the making of Aesthetic of Awe.
